Fleet Mechanic

 

Summary

Perform skilled labor as a Fleet Mechanic in a road construction environment.  Must take direction from Fleet Manager and complete tasks as assigned.  This position will work primarily in shop environments and may report off-site if necessary.

Essential Job Functions and duties

  • Thoroughly inspect vehicles and related equipment to detect any malfunctions or damages.
  • Adjust, and replace necessary units and related parts, including valves, hoses, belts, and alternators.
  • Overhaul and repair gasoline and diesel powered engines, and other automotive and mechanical equipment at off-site locations and at the garage.
  • Repair cooling, fuel, electrical, exhaust, and hydraulic systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance work on vehicles, including lubrication and oil changes.
  • Fabricate and weld to repair equipment as necessary.
  • Perform vehicle body work and collision repair.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment to aid in diagnostics; pick up and deliver vehicles and parts.
  • Ensure equipment and vehicles are running smoothly and are safe for operating.
  • Estimate time and cost of repairs.
  • Properly handle and safely operate all testing and repair tools.
  • Interact with company staff and understand the issues pertaining to their vehicles and equipment.
  • Attend to telephone calls of company staff and address their queries and grievances.
  • Place orders for necessary spare parts and ensure their timely procurement.
  • Effectively coordinate work functions with co-workers and other departments to ensure smooth workflow and proper use of tools, equipment, and work space.
  • Maintain a record of the service cycles, repairs, and part replacements.
  • Clean, maintain, and prepare work area and equipment to eliminate possible hazards.
  • Complete tasks within time constraints.
  • Follow company policies and safety regulations at all times.
  • Follow company process for fuel cards, cell phones, and pre-trip inspections.
  • Communicate with the Fleet Manager to ensure they are adequately informed on the project’s progress.
  • Maintain superior quality and safety at all times.

Job requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and excellent driving record at all times.
  • Flexibility to work overtime if necessary.   
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, reach overhead, bend, kneel, and twist.
  • Previous mechanical experience is desired.
